CASE STUDY:

Coca-Cola uses up to 75% less energy with MOVIGEAR®

SEW-EURODRIVE modernizes a PET transport line for Coca-Cola, achieving energy savings of up to 75%

Coca-Cola HBC Austria, the licensed bottler for the Coca-Cola Company in Austria, planned to modernize transport line 2a that handles Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Sprite. Lowering energy consumption and reducing CO2 emissions were their top objectives. After modernization, the measured values surpassed all expectations.

Challenge:

Coca-Cola HBC Austria GmbH sought to reduce energy consumption and costs in the overhaul of transport line 2a, which
links the bottling plant for Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite to the palletizing system via a shrink packer. The line conveys PET bottles holding 0.3 to 2.5 liters.

“Here in Vienna, we looked at several ways to reduce our carbon footprint. SEW-EURODRIVE came forward with a proposal to optimize the gear units, which we use for our conveyor belts, by installing a new technology, the MOVIGEAR®. Today, I can say that this technology allowed us to achieve an energy saving of 75%. For us, this means that we will take further steps with SEW to implement this improvement both at this site and at a site for mineral water.”
—  Erwin Langela, Supply Chain Director for Coca-Cola HBC Austria GmbH

Solution:

SEW-EURODRIVE provided forty MOVIGEAR units for the system. The power supply and communication signal were both transmitted using SNI technology (Single Line Network Installation). SNI enables data and energy transmission over a single 4-core cable, reducing the number of components required and significantly lowering installation costs.

“We were able to demonstrate that the modification of this PET bottling line enabled an energy cost saving of 75 percent. We installed a long-term measurement unit at the PET bottling plant to record the energy consumption and the load behavior for the duration of one month. This measurement allowed us to demonstrate that the modification of this PET bottling line enabled an energy cost saving of 75 percent. This corresponds to an approximate amount of 41 tons of CO2 emissions saved every year.”
—  Albert Dechant, Energy Efficient Solutions, Wien Energie GmbH

SEW-EURODRIVE Advantage:

By combining MOVIGEAR units with a PROFIBUS control system, Coca-Cola achieved a substantial 75% reduction in energy consumption compared to the drives and control system previously employed. These savings are equivalent to 90,400 lbs of CO2 annually*. Through these savings alone, the investment paid for itself in less than one year. Every component of the modernized transport line contributes to this astonishing result. For example, the integrated PROFIBUS minimizes idle times and saves energy when the line is shut down.

The electric company, Wien Energie GmbH, was involved from the initial planning stages of the project. They provided detailed energy consumption.**

* In relation to the CO2 balance in Austria **Wien Energie confirms these figures

Application Summary:

  • Compact: motor, gear unit and electronics are combined in a
    single drive unit
  • Reduced energy costs due to ultra-high efficiency
  • Reduced CO2 emissions
  • Reduced inventory costs due to universal mounting position and fewer variations
  • Reduced startup and operating costs of the conveyor system
  • Reduced installation costs using SNI (single line network installation) - one cable used for both energy and data transfer
  • No electronic line losses: controls located at motor
  • Quick amortization - often less than one year
  • IP66 design: hygienic surface
  • Resistance to common cleaning agents
  • Totally enclosed, non-vented (TENV) for quiet operation  without air/dirt/germ swirls
  • Simplified system planning and design
  • High reliability
