CASE STUDY:

Drive modernization at a cement facility

Saving a cement producer a lot more than just money

SEW-EURODRIVE engineered a 10% more efficient solution — saving a leading cement producer a lot more than just money.

Challenge

Running an archaic chain-and-sprocket drive on four bucket elevators, a leading cement producer was struggling with inefficiency and downtime, costing thousands of dollars in lost production.

Reliability was a problem. Downtime was a problem. Inefficiency was a huge problem. Losing money … was a problem.

Solution

SEW-EURODRIVE replaced the dated chain-and-sprocket drive with a modern, direct-coupled gearbox and motor from our X.e Series units. Additionally, SEW-EURODRIVE used severe-duty grade paint, a desiccant breather, and labyrinth-style greaseable seals to guard against cement dust and high temperatures.

SEW-EURODRIVE products used:

SEW-Install_After_9MD1256_1125
X3K large industrial gear unit

for the main elevator drive;  125 HP motor with 323,800 lb-in of torque

KF97 auxiliary gearmotor

that turns output shaft at 1/10th the normal operating speed for easy maintenance

"Over time, clients get used to inefficiencies and do not recognize how much they’re losing in time, money, and even job satisfaction for those in the field. SEW identifies and corrects outdated systems to improve processes tremendously."

Results

Replacing the cement plant’s dated chain-and-sprocket drive with an SEW direct-coupled gearbox and motor system resulted in multiple efficiencies.

  • Reduced the entire footprint, allowing for more space
  • Eliminated the need for recurring chain lubrication, reducing time and costs
  • Simplified the installation process, negating the manual alignment required for a foot-mounted motor
