CASE STUDY:

Hermes Fulfillment Cuts Energy Use by More Than 50% While Boosting Throughput Volume

Modernizing a High-Volume Logistics Hub

Hermes Fulfillment operates one of Europe’s largest and most advanced dispatch centers, handling up to 300,000 orders daily across approximately 30 kilometers of conveyor systems. As system components aged and operational demands increased, Hermes sought a modernization strategy to improve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.

By partnering with SEW-EURODRIVE, Hermes implemented an advanced drive and automation solution using MOVIGEAR® performance technology. The upgrade enabled significant energy savings, improved system flexibility, and reduced operational complexity.

 Challenge:

Aging Infrastructure and Complex Material Handling

Hermes required a system upgrade that could handle increasing throughput while improving energy efficiency and operational reliability.

The existing setup presented several challenges, particularly in handling diverse packaging types such as bags, parcels, and heavier containers.

Challenges:

    • Increasing demand and throughput requirements
    • High energy consumption across conveyor lines
    • Handling issues with bagged goods in roller conveyor systems
    • High breakaway torque requirements from accumulated loads
    • System dependency on separate sorting processes
    • Noise levels impacting working conditions

Solution:

Integrated MOVIGEAR® Performance System

SEW-EURODRIVE implemented a modernized conveyor solution using MOVIGEAR® performance drives within the MOVI-C® modular automation system.

This decentralized approach improved efficiency, simplified system architecture, and enabled greater flexibility in handling different types of goods.

    • Integrated mechatronic design: Motor, gear unit, and inverter in one housing
    • High-efficiency motors: IE5-level performance for reduced energy use
    • High overload capacity: Up to 300% for managing breakaway torques
    • Fan-free operation: Reduced noise and maintenance requirements
    • Decentralized intelligence: On-board I/O and sensor integration
    • Unified conveyor design: Handles parcels, bags, and containers in one system
    • Built-in buffering: Ensures continued operation during system interruptions

“We chose MOVIGEAR® performance because it delivers outstanding results
when it comes to saving energy.”
— Matthias Melahn, Group Leader of Process and Control Technology, Hermes Fulfillment

Results:

 Energy Savings and Operational Improvements

The modernization delivered measurable performance gains across the facility.

    • 34% energy savings on upgraded conveyor lines
    • 57% average energy savings per drive
    • 1,710 kg reduction in CO emissions annually
    • 50% reduction in noise levels (down to ~65 dB)
    • Reduced installed electrical power requirements
    • Improved system reliability and flexibility
    • Increased capacity for future expansion

Why is Matters:

By implementing a decentralized, high-efficiency drive solution, SEW-EURODRIVE enabled Hermes Fulfilment to modernize a large-scale logistics operation while significantly reducing energy consumption and system complexity.

The result is a more flexible, reliable, and sustainable material handling system that supports long-term growth and operational resilience.
